Topomax

Anyone take Topomax/Topirimate for migraine prevention or seizure? I was put on it for migraines a week ago because its one of the only drugs safe for migraine prevention as we cant take tricyclics, beta blockers, triptans or SSRIs. So my doctor prescribed it. Within a week I had chest pain, doubled heart rate, flashing lights, weakness and a near fainting spell that required my husband to catch me mid fall. I contacted a Brugada expert I talk to. He informed me this particular drug, although not listed on brugadadrugs.org, disturbs the current in the sodium channel and can be problematic with Brugada patients. He is contacting the doctors in Netherlands who maintain the drug database. Anyone else take this?

But is Topomax now on the list of drugs to be avoided? I still don’t see it in there…

I believe they have to have many cases compiled before they add it to the list. I was told Topomax *could* be an issue. It certainly was for me. If several people react to it then they would probably add it.

I’m new to Brugada and I realize this post is a few years old, but was just wondering if you worked out the problems with migraine medication and Brugada? I take amitriptyline (Elevil) to prevent migraines and it works wonderfully with no side effects. I also take the lowest dose of Toprol and have far fewer palpitations as I did before. I’m curious as to what helps others with Brugada.

I still suffer with migraines and don’t take any medication to prevent them. I only treat the pain when it comes. I should mention Elavil is on the list of meds you shouldn’t take when you have Brugada. It can cause an arrhythmia. You may want to mention it to your doctor and look at brugadadrugs.org and provide a copy to your doctors.

I have brugada diagnosed 2 years ago and have been taking topiramate for migraine without any problems for approx 1 year now. I do however only take a low dose as this helps control my migraines 25mg capsules/topamax sprinkle once a day. I am due to have an ICD fit tied in 4 weeks and am very nervous. I’m 39 and have struggled with the thought of an ICD but the thought of Brugada stealing me away from my children has pushed me to having the ICD. I keep crying as feel like my body and life is not my own and I am being completely torn. I would do anything for my children hence the icd however, I did not expect I would feel so upset and angered by this heart condition. The fact it is solely my decision at the end of the day as it is my body is such a heavy burden, I have racing mixed thoughts that change from hour to hour. It has taken me nearly 6 months to agree to the implant. 😦

I was on Topomax for headaches when I went into V-tach the second and third time. I was taken off that drug by my cardiologist when he diagnosed me with brugada.
